The first of two videos showing the making of a mini herb chopper and its leather sheath. The first video shows the metalwork; the second video is in two parts: making the leather sheath and using the herb chopper.
They are not meant to be ‘how-to’ videos: I’m just showing how I did it … this time! The chopper is my take on many forged examples I’ve seen on the internet, but the leather sheath design is my own (at least I haven’t seen one like it). The chopper and sheath can be hung up when not in use, out of harm’s way.
Part 1 is mainly the forging. It should all be pretty self-explanatory what’s going on. Tool steel (this is 01 tool steel / ground flat stock) is tougher to forge than mild steel and can only be forged within a certain heat range: the steel can be brittle and simply break if forged below red heat, likewise if it gets too hot it will readily burn, ruining the steel – so it requires a bit more concentration to work with.
Some of the tools I use (including the forge) are of my own design and making, or modified from standard tools, so they might look a little weird!
Some of the footage is 4 x speed so it’s a bit less tedious to watch.
