This is a sneak preview of my new design for an Open Source delta style 3D printer which I’ll be selling. All files will be released as Open Source Hard Ware license (full plans, original design files whatever you want). I will be selling upgrade kits too The idea is loosely based off a magnetic ball bearing system but, well improved to the extent that it requires no magnets and uses plastic parts with ‘sockets’ built in making it much easier to make and obtain parts for with a significant reduction of the total part-count compared to the Rostock style of motion system using bolts and universal joints etc.

There are going to be fatigue issues with the string (ie it will snap at some point moving 1,000,000s times) but they can be resolved by firstly having a backup piece of string to catch it when it falls, and secondly by having some rubber or other soft or smooth surface for where the string meets the wire eyelet. My next improvement to the design will feature a ball bearing in the centre between each pair of rods with a hole through to tie string onto, which will mean the string can be tight and not rub on anything as the bearings will do all the work.

I am very excited about this as the reduction in backlash is quite significant compared to other delta printers.

If you want a kit for the Kossell printer, then it would be easier and cheaper as you only need the motion system with a different printed carriage part, I can modify it to suit, just get on touch..
