A secondary function of coolant in metal cutting operations is to remove metal chips and metal fines from the cutting zone.

In order to prevent the finished surface from being damaged by metal chips, the tool workpiece interface must be continously flushed away with coolant.

Metal chips are removed using chip conveyors, but the volume of the chips can be a big problem.Recycling metal chips is mandatory and very often this might be a very dificult task since the chips are mixed with cutting fluids. Steel chips are often long, curled continuous segments which are dificult to handle.
